Good news for Indian Student Visa applicants: India Exempt from Major Australian Visa Changes

Indian students hoping to study in Australia can breathe a sigh of relief. Despite recent changes to visa rules, including stricter English language requirements, Indian nationals remain largely exempt thanks to a pre-existing trade agreement. This means the new 6.0 IELTS score, while higher than the previous 5.5, is already standard for most Australian universities favoured by Indian students.

The changes primarily affect a small percentage of students pursuing low-level vocational programs or switching between unrelated study paths. The Australian government has assured that these changes won’t negatively impact Indian students, recognizing their valuable contribution to the country’s skilled workforce and vibrant academic landscape.

Do you want to take your family on your study visa? Access Worldwide tells you how…

Canada, UK, US or Australia….confused about your choice? We can help! Why Canada is the obvious choice for Indian students planning to take along dependants for the duration of education-

Canada is currently the most open. There are no program restrictions and various dependant types are welcomed. In Canada, dependants have the option to apply for a study permit, work permit, or visitor visa. The Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP) provides a well-defined pathway for international students and their immediate family members (spouses and young children) to stay in Canada and gain the post-graduation work experience required for permanent residency applications.

  • Example: An undergraduate student from India enrolled in a computer science program at a Canadian university can bring their spouse and two young children on dependant visas.
  • Flexibility: No matter the study program, as long as the student meets immigration requirements, their dependants can join them.

US and Australia have some limitations: Both require specific study programs and have restrictions on dependant types.

Even though the US issued the most dependant visas to Indian students, the inability for dependants to work may discourage international students from bringing their families with them or may encourage them to look elsewhere to study.

  • Restrictions in Australia: Only specific program types like doctorates, research-based masters, and some vocational courses qualify for dependant visas. Undergraduate or general coursework-based programs may not allow bringing dependants.

UK has the most significant restriction: Only postgraduate research students can bring dependants.

Australia’s New Visa Rules: No Worries for Most Indian Students

Though Australia said it would tighten visa rules for students and low-skilled migrant workers and now demand higher English proficiency score of 6.0 for student visa applicants, up from the earlier 5.5, many experts believe there will be no impact on most students. This is because the new 6.0 English proficiency score is already a standard for most Australian universities favoured by Indian students. The move is only likely to impact students who do not have strong English skills. Genuine students with good profiles wouldn’t have issues,

The revamp will hit only the 5% or so of students going for low-level vocational programmes. There will also be changes for people who go from one course to another. If you’re studying in a particular programme and want to do a second one, those rules will be tightened for switching between unrelated study programs.

Australian high commissioner Philip Green said the new policy will not adversely impact opportunities for Indian students as they are protected under the Australia-India Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement. There remains a shortage of skilled workers in Australia – and the country will continue to attract Indian students.

Should you decide to study abroad next year, the options of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, and Australia are worth exploring.  The United States remains a popular choice due to its education quality and job prospects, particularly for STEM graduates. Germany is gaining attention for its welcoming environment and robust job market. Ireland offers an excellent education system along with ample job opportunities. New Zealand is known for its safety and hospitality, making it an appealing destination. Australia is favored for its foreign degrees and promising career opportunities.

The choice among these countries – Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and New Zealand – should harmonize with students’ financial capacity, educational aspirations, and personal preferences. SCORED LESS THAN 6 BAND IN IELTS? YOU CAN STILL GET ADMISSION IN CANADA!!

CANADA STUDY PERMIT REQUIREMENTS ARE CHANGING MAKING IELTS THE OBVIOUS CHOICE….

Recently, the Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) announced changes to the English test requirements for people applying for a Study Permit in Canada using the Student Direct Stream (SDS) program as follows:

From 10 August 2023, IELTS Academic test takers will no longer need to achieve a minimum 6.0 score in all individual test skills. Now just a 6.0 overall band score is required making it easier to choose IELTS Academic to get admission.

Can you use IELTS General Training for your SDS Visa application?

Yes, both tests are accepted by IRCC for the SDS Study Permit Program.

IRCC requires a band score of 6.0 in every section of the test (Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking) for IELTS General Training. Whereas with IELTS Academic test, only an overall or average band score of 6.0 is required.

For example:

Sukhbir sat the IELTS Academic test and secured a 6.5 score in Listening, 5.5 in Reading, 5.5 in Writing and 6.5 in Speaking. Despite getting 5.5 in two sections, he still qualifies for SDS as his Overall band score is 6.0 (6.5 + 5.5 + 5.5 + 6.5 / 4 = 6).

Up until the 10th of August 2023, applicants for SDS are required to achieve a minimum score of 6.0 in each individual skill area in IELTS Academic. However, with the recent changes this is no longer required.

The table below shows some of the scores test takers can now achieve to be accepted for SDS applications:

ReadingWritingListeningSpeakingOverall Score
5.55.57.55.56
7.05.57.07.06.5
7.07.57.53.06.5
5.05.56.57.06

Note: Before this announcement, they would have been required to retake the IELTS Academic test and get a band score of 6.0 in each skill.

You can apply to SDS with IELTS Academic or General Training test scores up to 2 years old. This means you can also use test scores received before 10th August to apply to SDS after the changes take effect on 10th August. It’s easy with IELTS!
